The Castle lies in the romantic landscape where the poet Yeats found his inspiration, north of awe-inspiring Connemara and south of the beautiful Donegal coast, with the impressive cliffs of Bunglass and Magho.

The entrance contains a monumental staircase, which leads to a wonderful hall, from where a second staircase in carved wood leads to the guestrooms. On the landing, a huge stained glass window depicts the family tree of the Coopers.

All the bedrooms at Markree Castle are individual in style and character, the furniture is old, in keeping with the style of the Castle, yet meet all the requirements of the modern day. They offer direct dial telephone, hairdryer, television, individualy controlled heating and beverage making facilities to make a hustle of the modern world outside. The majority of rooms have fantastic views of the river, of the beautiful gardens and the park with its wealth of Deer, Red Squirrels, Otters and Kingfishers.

For 350 years, the Cooper family have been living in this mighty castle, which is quite unique. The tale of Markree Castle is a wonderful journey through time, and guests are very welcome to discover its history by themselves.

There are no less than six golf courses in the surrounding area, and the estate itself offers riding facilities. From here, day or week trips on horseback through County Sligo are organised.. Close by is the 30- mile long Lough Gill trail, full of variety and charm. It leads past holy Celtic sites, rocks, small lakes and charming villages such as Dromahair. Then, it passes Creevelea Abbey, the ruins of a Franciscan Monastery, historic Parke's Castle and the prehistoric tombs of Carrowmore.
